Opening the Door to Education

Adult Education

The Adult Basic Education (ABE) ABE program at the Racine Literacy Council serves adults 18+ older whose first language is English but need our services for an array of reasons: to enter employment, obtain a GED, read and interpret bills, order from a menu, acquire a library card and read to their children or grandchildren, or pass a high stakes test to further their education or career. We try our best to individualize their instruction to help them attain these goals. The program caters to adults with low skills in:

• Reading
• Writing
• Math
• Spelling

While the RLC does not diagnose learning or reading disabilities, we do our best to accommodate students with the resources we have. Many times, our students lack phonemic awareness skills, the understanding of each letter and their sounds, which may result in teaching them the foundational literacy skills they did not master previously during their childhood. ABE students are either paired with one-to-one or placed into a small class setting for at least two hours a week. Our program includes a variety of levels, from reading and writing for beginners to GED test prep. **Please note, students reading below a 2nd-grade level are admitted on a case-by-case basis.
