Job Title: Program Coordinator - Student Tutor Entry Programs (STEPs)

Reports To: Executive Director (ED)

Weekly Hours: 22

Job Description:

Since 1965, the Racine Literacy Council (RLC) has provided tutoring to adults (18+) who want to improve their basic literacy skills or learn English. Adult learners have the opportunity to work towards achieving life-skill goals as they relate to themselves and their families, employment, education, and community engagement. Tutoring is provided with the help of volunteer tutors who are trained to work with learners in small groups or one-to-one. All new learners and tutors get started in the drop-in-program, Student Tutor Entry Programs (STEPs), where coordinators facilitate sessions and create lesson plans that build from week to week based on learner goals and feedback from tutors.

The STEPs Coordinator is in charge of STEPs program and updating the Literacy Adult Community Education System (LACES) software. Database reporting and management of the drop-in program (including the Assistant Coordinator, volunteer tutors, and adult learners), and ensuring the STEPs program is on the cutting edge of programming for adult learners.

Requirements:

• Facilitate 2-3 STEPs tutoring sessions per week. Coordinate schedule with Assistant Coordinator to cover all tutoring sessions: Tuesday, 9-11am / Tuesday, 6-8pm / Wednesday, 9-11am / Saturday, 10-12pm

• Promote a safe teaching/learning environment that focuses on helping students achieve their goals

• Communicate with key staff (Executive Director and Coordinators) on a daily/weekly basis

• Effectively manage time and prioritize activities and projects

• Computer skills: Word/Excel/PowerPoint/client management database

Responsibilities/Duties:

• Tutoring program coordination for two tutoring sessions (2 hours each)

• Communicate in a timely manner with RLC students, volunteer tutors, and staff members about upcoming classes, community opportunities, fundraising, office closures, etc.

• Strengthen partnerships with community organizations

• Assist in training of new volunteer tutors

• Represent the RLC at community fairs/open house events

• Oversee computer classes

• Administer TABE & TABE Clas-E tests to students / grade tests / update database with results

• Participate in fundraising, tutor recognition, and student recognition events/activities

• Survey STEPs students and tutors in a timely manner

• Maintain bulletin boards in STEPs

• Order curricula for student purchase and maintain supplies for STEPs

• Write adult education curriculum, i.e.: workplace literacy, computer literacy classes, etc.

Preferred Skills:

• Curriculum development

• Bilingual (Spanish/English)

• Prior management experience

• Strong organizational skills and keen attention to detail

• Experience working with curricula designed for adult learners

• Experience working with adults of diverse ethnic/socio-economic backgrounds

• Ability to assess the requirements and goals of a variety of constituents and create a long-term plan to address them

Education:

• Bachelor’s Degree or certificate in adult education, non-profit management or similar

Job Type: Part-time

Salary: $15.00 to $17.00 /hour
